Greek Airports: Passenger Traffic Up 9.1% in First 8 Months of 2024

Passenger traffic at all Greek airports saw a 9.1 percent increase in the first eight months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to recent data from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) and Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP).

In detail, the total number of passengers passing through Greece’s airports during the January-August period reached 54,769,867, up from 50,191,061 in the corresponding period of 2023.

The data covers all 39 airports across the country, including Athens International Airport (AIA), the 24 regional airports managed by the HCAA/HASP, and the 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece.

Regarding aircraft movements (both domestic and international arrivals and departures), there was a 6.8 percent increase in the first eight months of 2024 across all 39 airports. A total of 415,121 flights were recorded, compared to 388,579 flights in the same period of 2023.

Passenger traffic at 24 state airports up by 5.4%

Passenger traffic at the 24 airports managed by the HCAA/HASP increased by 5.4 percent, according to provisional statistics for the period from January to August 2024.

In more detail, the total number of passengers (including both international and domestic arrivals and departures) during this period reached 8,184,830, compared to 7,762,918 in the corresponding period of 2023.

Heraklion Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” handled 1,674,908 passengers this August, reflecting a 4.6 percent increase compared to the same time last year.

Significant increases in passenger traffic were recorded at several other CAA-managed airports in August 2024, compared to the previous year. Kasos Airport saw an impressive 60.4 percent rise, Milos Airport recorded a 36.3 percent increase, and Sitia Airport saw a 29.8 percent jump.

Athens Airport welcomes over 21.2 million travelers

Athens International Airport (AIA) achieved a new milestone during the January-August period, welcoming 21,260,634 passengers, a 13.9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. According to airport data, both domestic and international traffic exceeded 2023 levels by 7.8 percent and 16.6 percent, respectively.

The airport handled 180,594 flights during this time, marking an 11.8 percent rise from the previous year.

Airports run by Fraport Greece handle over 25.6 million passengers

Passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece exceeded 25.6 million in the first eight months of 2024, representing a 6.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.

From January to August, domestic traffic rose by 7 percent, while international traffic saw a 6.2 percent year-on-year increase. The number of flights also grew by 4.3 percent over the same period.
